What is HSK 4? Opinions, work, and the first 成语

HSK 4 is the level Chinese universities ask for, and the level where the language stops being about your immediate surroundings. Around 1,200 words: abstract verbs (认为, 建议, 表示), emotional and professional vocabulary, and the first fixed four-character idioms — 成语 — used without a gloss.

Our HSK 4 stories run 800–1,000 characters across 10–15 pages. Sentences carry two or three clauses. Characters have interior lives: they consider, they regret, they decide something and change their mind about it two pages later.

The reading skill that matters here is not lookup speed, it is tolerance. A native-adjacent sentence will always contain something you do not know. HSK 4 is where you learn to keep moving through it, which is the actual difference between a student and a reader.

How to study at HSK 4

  1. Read the whole page before looking anything up. Tolerating unknown words is a trainable skill and this is the level to train it.
  2. Note the abstract verbs, not the nouns. 认为, 觉得, 建议, 决定 carry the sentence structure; concrete nouns you will pick up passively.
  3. Read one story twice in a week, not two stories once. Depth beats coverage from HSK 4 onward.
  4. Say the 成语 out loud when you meet one. Four-character rhythm is half of why they stick.
  5. Switch topics deliberately. Work vocabulary and emotional vocabulary barely overlap, and HSK 4 needs both.

HSK 4 questions

Is HSK 4 the hardest jump?

For most learners, yes. HSK 3 to HSK 4 roughly doubles the vocabulary and moves from concrete to abstract at the same time. The fix is volume: more reading at HSK 3 and HSK 4 before worrying about HSK 5.

How many words is HSK 4?

About 1,200 cumulative words in HSK 2.0. That is generally considered the threshold for undergraduate study in China and for most workplace conversation.

Do I need to know 成语 to read HSK 4 stories?

No. The common ones appear in context and are covered by the translation on the page. Learning them from stories works far better than from a list, because the idiom arrives already attached to a situation.

Can I pass the HSK 4 exam by reading stories?

Reading builds the vocabulary and the speed the reading section needs, which is where most candidates lose time. You will still want dedicated listening practice and a few timed mock papers before the exam itself.

How long should an HSK 4 story take?

15–25 minutes for a first read. If it takes an hour, drop to HSK 3 for a few weeks — comfort at the level below is what makes the level above readable.
