What is HSK 1? The first 150 characters of Chinese
HSK (汉语水平考试, Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is the official Chinese proficiency scale. HSK 1 is the entry point: around 150 words and 300 characters of exposure, enough to greet someone, count, talk about your family and say what you want to eat.
At this level our stories run 150–250 characters across 5 pages. Sentences follow the plain subject–verb–object skeleton, the grammar stays inside 是, 有, 很, 不 and 吗, and nothing is chained together — one idea per sentence, every time.
Reading at HSK 1 is not about learning new words. It is about seeing the words you already know sitting in a real sentence, in order, with tones attached. That is why every character carries pinyin and every page carries a full English translation: you never get stuck, so you never stop reading.
How to study at HSK 1
- Read out loud, always. Silent reading at this level means you skip the tones, and tones are the hardest thing to retrofit later.
- Read the whole sentence in Chinese before you look at the English. Word-by-word decoding builds a habit you will spend months undoing.
- Re-read every story twice. First pass for meaning, second pass to notice measure words (个, 本, 只) and the position of 的.
- Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. At this length, ten minutes is one or two stories.
- Do not use a dictionary mid-story. Finish the page, then look up the one word that bothered you most.
HSK 1 questions
I only know pinyin. Can I read HSK 1 stories?
Yes. Every character on the page has its pinyin above it, so you can read the whole story phonetically from day one. Most learners start by reading the pinyin, then start recognising the characters underneath after five or six stories.
How many characters do I need for HSK 1?
The official HSK 1 list is 150 words, which works out to roughly 170–300 unique characters depending on the edition (HSK 3.0 raised the count). Our HSK 1 stories stay inside that set, plus proper nouns, which are always glossed.
How long does an HSK 1 story take to read?
About 5 minutes the first time, 2–3 minutes on a re-read. They are 150–250 characters over 5 illustrated pages — short on purpose, so finishing one is never in doubt.
Do I need to learn tones before reading?
No, but read out loud. The pinyin includes tone marks, and reading aloud is what wires the tone to the word instead of leaving it as an abstract number you memorised on a flashcard.
When should I move to HSK 2?
When you can read an HSK 1 story straight through without checking the translation more than once or twice. For most learners that is 10–15 stories, or two to four weeks of daily reading.
