· 8 min read
TL;DR

HSK 6 requires 5,334 cumulative words and 1,940 characters under the syllabus in force since July 2026, against 5,000 words under HSK 2.0. It is no longer the top: HSK 7-9 adds 5,562 words. Peking University asks for HSK 6 with 200 to 210 points, so the score matters as much as the level.

HSK 6 is the advanced level of the six classic HSK levels, and under the syllabus in force since July 2026 it requires 5,334 cumulative words and 1,940 characters, against 5,000 words under HSK 2.0. It is no longer the top of the scale: the HSK 7-9 band sits above it, with 5,562 more words.

For most candidates, HSK 6 is still the certificate that matters, because it is what universities like Peking University ask for. This guide covers the exam, the list, the scores that admissions offices actually want, and when HSK 7-9 is the better target.

What is on the HSK 6 exam?

The HSK 6 exam is a 300-point test of listening, reading and writing, with 101 questions in about 140 minutes, according to the official chinesetest.cn page for HSK 6. Reading has 50 questions in 50 minutes, writing is a single 45-minute task, and the page prints no HSK 6 pass mark.

CTI’s new-format sample papers for the 2026 syllabus have 82 questions at HSK 6, but the level page still describes the format above, so check it again before you register. Since no pass mark is printed, read our guide to the HSK passing score before you decide what score to aim for. The single writing task is worth a third of the total, so it deserves its own training.

How many words and characters does HSK 6 require?

HSK 6 requires 5,334 cumulative words and 1,940 characters under the syllabus published in November 2025, and 1,777 of those words are new at HSK 6. Only 413 characters are new at this level, so most new HSK 6 words are fresh combinations of characters you already know.

The current figures are our own count of the official HSK syllabus PDF, with numbered homographs merged and each word kept at its first level. Of the new HSK 6 words, 1,474 (83%) have two characters, such as 白领 (báilǐng, white-collar worker) or 保修 (bǎoxiū, warranty). Note that the current HSK 6 adds fewer new words than HSK 2.0 did (1,777 against 2,500), because the lower levels now carry more. The whole level-by-level picture is in how many characters per HSK level.

How different is the current HSK 6 list from HSK 2.0?

The current HSK 6 list differs from HSK 2.0 far more than the totals suggest. According to Coco Chinese’s analysis of the official word lists (the Coco Chinese HSK Level Profile 2026), all six HSK 2.0 levels together contain 59.1% of the current HSK 6 list, and one third of the HSK 2.0 vocabulary now sits above HSK 6.

We measured it with a short script, hsk_level_profile.py, comparing the current syllabus with the HSK 2.0 lists from the open complete-hsk-vocabulary dataset:

MeasureValue
Current HSK 6 list found in any HSK 2.0 list59.1% (3,154 of 5,334)
Current HSK 6 list found in no HSK 2.0 list40.9% (2,180 words)
New HSK 6 words found in no HSK 2.0 list47.3% (840 of 1,777)
HSK 2.0 words still within current HSK 1-663.2% (3,154 of 4,991)
HSK 2.0 words now at HSK 7-933.0% (1,648)
HSK 2.0 words in no current list3.8% (189)

In plain terms: a learner who mastered the full HSK 2.0 list knows 1,648 words that the current syllabus now treats as HSK 7-9, and is missing 2,180 words that the current HSK 6 expects. The two lists reward different vocabulary at the same level number. Our HSK 3.0 vs 2.0 comparison explains how the standards were rebuilt.

What score do universities want at HSK 6?

Universities that ask for HSK 6 usually also ask for a minimum score, so the level alone is rarely enough. Peking University’s 2026 undergraduate requirements ask for HSK 6 with 210 or above, and its Chinese-taught master’s and PhD programs add a minimum of 65 in the writing section.

The graduate page adds that qualified HSK 7-9 scores are also accepted. The writing minimum is the detail most candidates miss: a single 45-minute task can sink an otherwise strong application. Compare with HSK 5, which some programs accept, in our HSK 5 guide.

What grammar does HSK 6 add?

HSK 6 grammar is the shortest list of HSK 1 to 6, with 50 official items in the current syllabus, because by this level the work shifts from structures to vocabulary, register and speed. The new items are mostly formal connectors, literary prepositions and expressive fixed frames.

Official examples include 除非……否则…… (chúfēi… fǒuzé…, unless… otherwise), 就算……也…… (jiùsuàn… yě…, even if), 要么……要么…… (yàome… yàome…, either… or), the literary preposition 于 (yú) and frames like X归X,Y归Y (X is X, Y is Y). Coco’s HSK 6 curriculum, written by native teacher Yaxuan Cai, covers this level in 12 units and 118 grammar patterns, 21 of them marked as core, from intensity and vividness to concession, causation and native-like expressions.

How long does it take to prepare for HSK 6?

Preparing for HSK 6 usually takes six months to a year of daily study after HSK 5. The current list adds 1,777 words, about 10 a day for six months, but speed is the real test: 50 reading questions in 50 minutes and one 45-minute writing task leave no time to decode slowly.

Widely cited estimates put HSK 6 above 2,000 cumulative study hours under HSK 2.0. A practical way to spend that time:

  1. Read long texts daily. Articles, essays, novels, at a level where you only look up a few words per page. At HSK 6 the bottleneck is reading speed, and only volume builds it.
  2. Collect words from reading, not from the list. Check the HSK 6 list every few weeks to see which words you have met, and target the gaps with spaced repetition.
  3. Train the writing task on its own. Write under a 45-minute timer at least once a week, then compare with a model answer. PKU’s writing minimum of 65 shows that this section can decide an application.
  4. Sit full timed papers in the last month. The exam lasts about 140 minutes, and stamina is part of the score.

If your HSK 5 result was close to the line, consolidate before you start: the jump from 3,557 to 5,334 words is large, and the gaps of HSK 5 resurface in every HSK 6 text.

Should you aim for HSK 6 or HSK 7-9?

Aim for HSK 6 if your target program asks for it, as Peking University’s programs do, and if your reading is close to the current list. Aim for HSK 7-9 only if you need proof of professional or academic Chinese, because the HSK 7-9 exam assumes the full 10,896-word list and adds translation and speaking.

Where Coco fits

Coco Chinese has graded stories up to HSK 6 with native Beijing audio, tap-to-translate pinyin and spaced repetition, and its HSK 6 path follows the 12 units above. At this level that means reading volume without stopping for a dictionary, which is what the 50-minute reading section rewards. You can sample the HSK graded library for free to check where your reading sits.

The bottom line

HSK 6 under the current syllabus means 5,334 words, 1,940 characters and 50 grammar items, tested in 101 questions with no published pass mark. It is no longer the top of the HSK, but it is still what demanding programs ask for, often with a score floor: 210 at Peking University for undergraduates, plus 65 in writing for graduate programs. The current list differs sharply from HSK 2.0, so prepare with current material, train the writing task on its own, and only aim for HSK 7-9 if you need the extra proof.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do you need for HSK 6?
It depends on the list. Under HSK 2.0, HSK 6 requires 5,000 cumulative words and was the top level. Under the syllabus published in November 2025 and in force since July 2026, HSK 6 requires 5,334 cumulative words, of which 1,777 are new at HSK 6, and 1,940 characters, of which 413 are new. These are unique word forms from our own count of the official list. Above HSK 6, the HSK 7-9 band adds 5,562 more words, for 10,896 in total.
Is HSK 6 the highest level of the HSK?
Not any more. Under HSK 2.0, HSK 6 was the top of a six-level scale. The current HSK adds a combined advanced band, HSK 7-9, which CTI describes as intended for master's and doctoral students in China, Chinese majors and professionals working in Chinese. Its exam adds translation and speaking sections and lasts about 210 minutes. HSK 6 is still an advanced certificate and still the level that demanding programs such as Peking University's ask for, but it now sits in the middle of the advanced range, not at the summit.
What score do you need on HSK 6?
The official chinesetest.cn page for HSK 6 states a 300-point full score but prints no pass mark, so the useful bar is set by whoever reads your certificate. Peking University's 2026 undergraduate requirements ask for HSK 6 with 210 or above. Its master's and PhD programs taught in Chinese ask for more than 200 in science and more than 210 in the humanities, with at least 65 in the writing section. A bare pass is often not enough for admissions, so aim for a margin.
How long does it take to prepare for HSK 6?
From HSK 5, most learners need six months to a year of daily study. The current list adds 1,777 words at HSK 6, about 10 a day for six months, but the harder part is speed: HSK 6 has 50 reading questions in 50 minutes and a single 45-minute writing task. Widely cited estimates put HSK 6 above 2,000 cumulative study hours under HSK 2.0. Reading volume decides the result far more than word-list drilling at this level, so plan your weeks around reading time.
Is an old HSK 6 certificate still worth the same?
An HSK 2.0 HSK 6 certificate still shows advanced Chinese, but the lists behind it have moved. According to Coco Chinese's analysis of the official word lists, 1,648 of the 4,991 HSK 2.0 words (33.0%) now sit at HSK 7-9, while 2,180 words of the current HSK 6 list (40.9%) appear in no HSK 2.0 list. The official pages state that HSK scores are valid for two years, so in practice most applicants sit a recent exam anyway and should prepare with current material.
Should I take HSK 6 or HSK 7-9?
Take HSK 6 if a program you are targeting asks for HSK 6, as Peking University's undergraduate and graduate programs do, and if your reading is near the current HSK 6 list. Consider HSK 7-9 if you need proof of professional or academic Chinese, want translation and speaking on the same certificate, or are applying to programs that accept it, as Peking University does for its graduate programs. HSK 7-9 assumes the full 10,896-word list, so it is a much larger step.
