HSK 5 Guide: Word Count, Exam and Who Needs It

· 8 min read
TL;DR

HSK 5 is the upper-intermediate level of the HSK: 3,557 cumulative words and 1,527 characters under the syllabus in force since July 2026, against 2,500 words under HSK 2.0. It is enough for some programs, such as Tsinghua's Chinese-English taught undergraduate degrees, but not for Peking University, which asks for HSK 6.

HSK 5 is the upper-intermediate level of the HSK, and under the syllabus in force since July 2026 it requires 3,557 cumulative words and 1,527 characters, against 2,500 words under HSK 2.0. It is the level where reading articles and simple novels with a dictionary nearby becomes realistic, and a level that some Chinese universities accept for admission.

This guide covers the exam, the word list, the universities that accept it, a realistic preparation plan, and a measurement of how far older HSK 2.0 textbooks and word lists still take you.

What is on the HSK 5 exam?

The HSK 5 exam is a 300-point test of listening, reading and writing, with 100 questions in about 125 minutes, according to the official chinesetest.cn page for HSK 5. Reading carries the most questions, 45 in 45 minutes, and the official page states the full score but prints no pass mark for HSK 5.

CTI’s new-format sample papers for the 2026 syllabus have 72 questions at HSK 5, but the level page still describes the format above, so check it again before you register. Because no HSK 5 pass mark is printed, the bar that counts is the one set by the institution reading your score; our guide to the HSK passing score covers how that works.

How many words and characters does HSK 5 require?

HSK 5 requires 3,557 cumulative words and 1,527 characters under the syllabus published in November 2025, and 1,579 of those words are new at HSK 5. That is the largest new-word step between HSK 1 and HSK 6, and it nearly doubles the 1,978 words you hold after HSK 4.

MeasureHSK 2.0Current syllabus (2025)

The current figures are our own count of the official HSK syllabus PDF, with numbered homographs merged and each word kept at its first level. The new HSK 5 words are mostly compounds: 1,283 of the 1,579 (81%) have two characters, like 熬夜 (áoyè, to stay up late) or 报警 (bàojǐng, to call the police). With only 431 new characters, most new words reuse characters you already know. The full level-by-level table is in how many characters per HSK level.

How much of HSK 5 do HSK 2.0 materials cover?

HSK 2.0 textbooks cover a little more than half of the current HSK 5 list. According to Coco Chinese’s analysis of the official word lists (the Coco Chinese HSK Level Profile 2026), HSK 2.0 levels 1 to 5 contain 2,049 of the 3,557 words required by the current HSK 5, or 57.6%.

We measured it with a short script, hsk_level_profile.py, comparing the current syllabus with the HSK 2.0 lists from the open complete-hsk-vocabulary dataset:

MeasureValue
Current HSK 5 list found in HSK 2.0 levels 1-557.6% (2,049 of 3,557)
Current HSK 5 list found in no HSK 2.0 list37.7% (1,340 words)
New HSK 5 words that were HSK 2.0 level 5768 of 1,579
New HSK 5 words that were HSK 2.0 level 6155
HSK 2.0 level 1-5 words still required by HSK 582.3%
HSK 2.0 level 1-5 words moved up to HSK 6 / HSK 7-9258 / 123

The pattern cuts both ways. An old HSK 5 book teaches some words that now belong to higher levels, and it misses 1,340 words of the current list that appear in no HSK 2.0 list at all, many of them practical modern vocabulary such as 安全带 (ānquándài, seat belt) or 保质期 (bǎozhìqī, shelf life). If you prepare with HSK 2.0 materials, add a current list or wide reading at the level.

Is HSK 5 enough for a Chinese university?

HSK 5 is enough for some Chinese university programs but not for the most demanding ones. Tsinghua University asks applicants to its Chinese-English taught undergraduate programs for HSK 5 or above with more than 60 in each section, while Peking University asks for HSK 6 with 210 or above.

University and programRequirementSource
Tsinghua, undergraduate, Chinese-English taught programsHSK 5 or above, above 60 in listening, reading and writingTsinghua eligibility
Peking University, undergraduate (2026, without written exam)HSK 6, 210 or abovePKU score requirements

Two lessons follow. First, a section minimum can matter more than the total: a candidate with 240 overall and 55 in writing would miss Tsinghua’s bar. Second, check the exact page of your program before you choose a target level. If your goal is PKU or a similar program, read our HSK 6 guide before you plan.

What grammar does HSK 5 add?

HSK 5 grammar is about formal written Chinese: the current syllabus lists 70 official items at this level, many of them connectors, adverbs and fixed frames that structure an argument in articles, reports and essays rather than in everyday conversation. Official examples include 一旦……就…… (yídàn… jiù…, once… then), 哪怕……也…… (nǎpà… yě…, even if), 不但不……反而…… (búdàn bù… fǎn’ér…, not only not… but instead) and adverbs like 毕竟 (bìjìng, after all) and 居然 (jūrán, unexpectedly).

Coco’s HSK 5 curriculum, written by native teacher Yaxuan Cai, spreads this material over 15 units and 212 grammar patterns, more than any other level in the app, with 52 marked as core. The unit themes show the shift: contrary and unexpected outcomes, consequence and result, “rather than” and preference, “let alone”, “since” and “until”, doubt and inevitability, formal reference, “unless” and exclusion. These patterns rarely appear in conversation but fill every article you will read.

How long does it take to prepare for HSK 5?

Preparing for HSK 5 takes most learners five to eight months of daily study after HSK 4. The current list adds 1,579 words, about 10 a day for five months, and the exam’s 45 reading questions in 45 minutes mean that reading speed, not word count, usually decides the result.

Widely cited estimates put HSK 5 around 1,200 cumulative study hours under HSK 2.0, and the current list is larger, so treat that as a floor. Most learners arrive at HSK 5 after the plateau described in HSK 4: the hardest jump, and the way out is the same: volume of reading at the right level. Spend most of your time reading and listening to texts where you know almost every word, review new words with spaced repetition, and write one short paragraph a few times a week to train the writing section.

A workable split over six months looks like this:

  1. Months 1 to 2: volume. Read every day at the top of HSK 4 and the start of HSK 5. Add about 10 new words a day from what you read, not from a list. Listen to the audio of the same texts.
  2. Months 3 to 4: formal Chinese. Move to texts with connectors and set phrases: short articles, opinion pieces, longer stories. Note each new frame (一旦, 哪怕, 反而) in a sentence you copy by hand.
  3. Month 5: writing. Write a short paragraph three times a week on everyday topics, then compare it with a model text at the level. The writing section takes 40 minutes, so practise under time.
  4. Month 6: exam rehearsal. Sit timed sample papers, and look at each section score, not just the total, since some universities set a minimum per section.

If one block runs late, extend it rather than skipping ahead: the reading volume of the first months is what carries the rest.

Where Coco fits

Coco Chinese has graded stories for HSK 1 to 6 with native Beijing audio, tap-to-translate pinyin and spaced repetition, and its HSK 5 path follows the 15 units above. That covers the reading volume HSK 5 depends on. Start with the free stories in the HSK graded library to see where your reading actually sits.

The bottom line

HSK 5 under the current syllabus means 3,557 words, 1,527 characters and 70 grammar items, tested in 100 questions with no published pass mark. It opens some programs, like Tsinghua’s Chinese-English taught degrees, but PKU expects HSK 6. HSK 2.0 materials cover 57.6% of today’s list, so add current material. Plan five to eight months from HSK 4, and spend most of it reading.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do you need for HSK 5?
It depends on the list your exam uses. Under HSK 2.0, HSK 5 requires 2,500 cumulative words. Under the syllabus published in November 2025 and in force since July 2026, HSK 5 requires 3,557 cumulative words, of which 1,579 are new at HSK 5, the largest single step from HSK 1 to HSK 6. These are unique word forms from our own count of the official list. The same syllabus lists 1,527 characters up to HSK 5, including 431 new ones.
Is HSK 5 enough to study at a Chinese university?
For some programs, yes, but not for all of them. Tsinghua University's undergraduate eligibility page asks applicants to its Chinese-English taught programs for HSK 5 or above, with scores above 60 in listening, reading and writing. Peking University asks for more: its 2026 undergraduate score requirements list HSK 6 with 210 or above, and its master's and PhD programs taught in Chinese ask for HSK 6 too. Always check the exact admissions page of your target program, because requirements differ by university, degree and discipline.
What is the passing score for HSK 5?
HSK 5 is scored out of 300 points, with listening, reading and writing reported separately. The official chinesetest.cn page for HSK 5 states the 300-point full score but, unlike HSK 3 and HSK 4, prints no pass mark. The 180 often quoted is a historical convention, not a figure on the current page. In practice, the bar that matters is the one set by whoever reads your certificate: Tsinghua, for example, asks for more than 60 in each section rather than a total.
How long does it take to prepare for HSK 5?
From HSK 4, plan on five to eight months of steady daily study. The current list adds 1,579 words at HSK 5, which is about 10 new words a day for five months, and 70 grammar items, most of them formal connectors. Widely cited estimates put HSK 5 at around 1,200 cumulative study hours under HSK 2.0, and the current list is larger. The real limit is reading speed: HSK 5 has 45 reading questions in 45 minutes, so daily reading volume matters more than extra flashcards.
Can I use HSK 2.0 materials for HSK 5?
Partly. According to Coco Chinese's analysis of the official word lists, HSK 2.0 levels 1 to 5 cover 57.6% of the current HSK 5 list (2,049 of 3,557 words), and 37.7% of today's HSK 5 words are in no HSK 2.0 list at all. In the other direction, 258 words that HSK 2.0 taught at level 5 or below now sit at HSK 6 and 123 at HSK 7-9. An old HSK 5 book still teaches useful words, but it no longer matches the exam list.
What is the difference between HSK 4 and HSK 5?
HSK 5 is where Chinese stops being everyday language and starts being written language. Under the current syllabus, HSK 4 ends at 1,978 cumulative words and HSK 5 adds 1,579 more, almost doubling the list. Both exams have 100 questions, but HSK 5 lasts about 125 minutes instead of 105, reading time grows from 40 to 45 minutes, and writing grows from 25 to 40 minutes. Grammar shifts to formal connectors and set phrases, such as 一旦 (yídàn, once) and 哪怕 (nǎpà, even if), the patterns of articles, reports and novels.
