HSK 3 Study Plan: Words, Grammar and Timeline
A realistic HSK 3 study plan takes about 12 weeks after HSK 2. The current syllabus adds 491 new words (988 in total) and 96 grammar items, and the exam adds a writing section. Old HSK 2.0 textbooks cover only 55.7% of today's HSK 3 list, so check which standard your materials use.
A realistic HSK 3 study plan takes about 12 weeks for a learner who already holds HSK 2, spent mostly on daily reading, grammar in context and a little handwriting. Under the current syllabus, HSK 3 adds 491 new words and 96 grammar items, and the exam introduces a writing section for the first time.
That second point matters more than most plans admit. HSK 3 is where the test stops supporting you with pinyin and starts asking you to produce Chinese, so the plan below balances input with output.
What is on the HSK 3 exam?
The HSK 3 exam is a 300-point test of listening, reading and writing, with 80 questions in about 90 minutes, and a total of 180 is a pass according to the official chinesetest.cn page. HSK 3 is the first HSK level with a writing section, and there is no pinyin support.
| Section | Questions | Time (minutes) | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 40 | about 35 | 100 |
| Reading | 30 | 30 | 100 |
| Writing | 10 | 15 | 100 |
| Total | 80 | about 85 (plus 5 for personal details) | 300 |

CTI has also released new-format sample papers for the 2026 syllabus with 70 questions at HSK 3 and a separate speaking part, but the level page still describes the format above, so check it again before you register. The pass mark applies to the total only, which our guide to the HSK passing score explains in detail. Speaking is a separate exam, the HSKK.
How many words and characters does HSK 3 require?
HSK 3 requires 988 cumulative words and 655 characters under the syllabus published in November 2025 and in force since July 2026, against 600 words under HSK 2.0. Of those 988 words, 491 are new at HSK 3, which is more than HSK 1 (300) or HSK 2 (197) added.
| Measure | HSK 2.0 | Current syllabus (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative words at HSK 3 | 600 | 988 |
| New words at HSK 3 | 300 | 491 |
| Cumulative characters at HSK 3 | no official list | 655 |
| New characters at HSK 3 | no official list | 284 |
| Official grammar items at HSK 3 | not itemized the same way | 96 |
The current figures are our own count of the official HSK syllabus PDF, with numbered homographs merged and each word kept at its first level. For every level side by side, see how many characters per HSK level.
The new HSK 3 words are short: 126 are single characters, 339 have two characters and 26 have three. They are still everyday words, such as 搬家 (bānjiā, to move house), 笔记 (bǐjì, notes) and 变成 (biànchéng, to become).
Can you still use an HSK 2.0 textbook for HSK 3?
An HSK 2.0 textbook still helps for HSK 3, but it covers only part of the current list. According to Coco Chinese’s analysis of the official word lists (the Coco Chinese HSK Level Profile 2026), HSK 2.0 levels 1 to 3 cover 550 of the 988 words that the current HSK 3 requires, or 55.7%.
We ran the comparison with a short script, hsk_level_profile.py, against the current syllabus and the HSK 2.0 lists from the open complete-hsk-vocabulary dataset. Three numbers summarize it:
- 55.7% of the current HSK 3 list is in HSK 2.0 levels 1 to 3.
- 36.4% of the current HSK 3 list (360 words) is in no HSK 2.0 list at any level.
- 92.4% of the HSK 2.0 level 1 to 3 words are still required up to HSK 3 today.
So the old book is not wasted: almost everything in it still counts. The problem is what it leaves out. Some of the missing words are simple, like 北 (běi, north) or 冰 (bīng, ice), which HSK 2.0 only taught inside longer words, and 54 of the new HSK 3 words used to sit at HSK 2.0 level 4. If your textbook predates 2026, pair it with a current word list or graded reading at the new level. Our HSK 3.0 vs 2.0 comparison explains why the lists diverge.
What grammar is new at HSK 3?
HSK 3 grammar is the longest list of HSK 1 to 6, with 96 official items in the current syllabus, and it is where Mandarin sentences start to move. The main additions are complements (direction, result, potential), the 把 (bǎ) and 被 (bèi) constructions, comparisons beyond 比 and conditional sentences.
Coco’s HSK 3 curriculum, written by native teacher Yaxuan Cai, groups this material into 12 units and 93 grammar patterns, 27 of them marked as core. The unit themes give a usable order:
- Change of state with 了 and 越来越 (yuèláiyuè, more and more)
- Direction complements
- Simultaneous actions
- Potential complements (听得懂, tīng de dǒng, can understand)
- Duration and interest
- Advanced comparisons
- The 把 construction
- Compound directions
- Conditionals
- The 被 passive
- Degree and result complements
- Connectors and review
The full official list by level is in our HSK grammar list. Do not try to memorize 96 items as rules. Meet each one in sentences first, then check the rule.
What does a 12-week HSK 3 study plan look like?
A 12-week HSK 3 study plan works for a learner who holds HSK 2 and can study about an hour a day. It spreads the 491 new words at roughly 41 a week, takes one grammar unit per week, and adds handwriting from week 5 and timed sample papers in the last two weeks.
| Weeks | Words (new) | Grammar focus | Main activity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | about 80 | units 1-2: change of state, direction complements | daily graded reading, SRS review |
| 3-4 | about 80 | units 3-4: simultaneous actions, potential complements | reading plus listening to the same texts |
| 5-6 | about 80 | units 5-6: duration, advanced comparisons | reading, first handwriting of common characters |
| 7-8 | about 80 | units 7-8: 把, compound directions | reading, sentence-ordering practice |
| 9-10 | about 80 | units 9-10: conditionals, 被 | reading, one untimed sample paper |
| 11-12 | the last 90 or so | units 11-12: degree and result complements, connectors | two timed sample papers, error review |
Adjust the pace, not the order. If you study 30 minutes a day, stretch the same plan to 20 to 24 weeks. Widely cited estimates put HSK 3 around 300 cumulative hours under HSK 2.0, and the current list is larger, so give yourself margin rather than squeezing it.
What should a daily HSK 3 routine include?
A daily HSK 3 routine should include three blocks: 20 minutes of reading graded texts at HSK 3 with audio, 15 to 20 minutes of spaced-repetition review for new words, and 10 to 15 minutes of output, either writing a few sentences or handwriting characters from the week’s list.
Reading comes first because it trains the reading section and feeds the other two. Listen to the same text you read, which prepares the 40 listening questions without extra material. Keep output short but daily: HSK 3 writing asks you to order words into sentences and write characters, and both are habits, not knowledge.
Pick reading material by comfort, not by ambition. If you need the translation for more than one sentence in five, the text is above your level and you will learn less from it, not more. Drop a level, read faster, and come back to the harder text in two weeks. Track one number per week: how many new words from the HSK 3 list you met in your reading. If it stalls, change your material before you change your plan.
Where Coco fits
Coco Chinese has graded stories for HSK 1 to 6 with native Beijing audio, tap-to-translate pinyin and spaced repetition, and its HSK 3 path follows the 12 units described above. That covers the reading and listening blocks of the daily routine. You can test the level today with the free stories in the HSK graded library: if an HSK 3 story feels comfortable with the translation hidden, you are on track.
The bottom line
HSK 3 under the current syllabus means 988 words, 655 characters and 96 grammar items, and a first writing section. Plan about 12 weeks after HSK 2 at an hour a day: one grammar unit a week, about 41 new words a week, daily reading with audio and a few minutes of writing. If you study from an HSK 2.0 book, remember that it covers 55.7% of today’s list, so add current material. Once HSK 3 is done, the next step is the hardest one, explained in HSK 4: the hardest jump.
